“A few months ago my friend, Jody Heaton died. He was a prolific chess player and I had many games against him. He was not familiar with organised chess competitions and I don’t think he played for any teams before joining Eccles Chess Club.
I remember playing the Danish gambit against him, which he had never seen before when he first saw how I sacrificed pawns for a stronger positional structure he just came out with the word “Wow!!”. He lost this game but the following week when we played again he had studied the opening and had devised a cunning reply. He won the return match and then started smiling.”
