A Personal Note from Nigel Holland
I would like to thank all staff and clients for their continued support over the years.
Their loyalty and trust have been instrumental in building the practice to where it is today.
I have always taken pride in delivering a personal, hands-on service and continue to enjoy working with businesses from our Widnes office.
The History of Our Widnes Office – From Victorian Foundations to a Modern Practice
1887 – Victorian Foundations
Widnes Road is one of the town’s principal routes, originally constructed during the Victorian era as a terrace of mixed residential and commercial properties.
Our offices at 102–104 Widnes Road form part of this historic streetscape, combining traditional architecture with a modern professional environment.
The name “Widnes” is generally believed to derive from Danish origins:
-
-
vid meaning “wide”
-
noese meaning “nose”
-
This likely refers to a geographical feature projecting into the River Mersey. However, an alternative interpretation suggests ved (wood), pointing to a wooded promontory. Historic spellings include Vidnes, Wydnes and Wydness.
This blend of heritage and evolution mirrors the development of our own practice.
1983 – Professional Qualification
On 23 November 1983, Nigel Holland qualified as a Chartered Accountant.
This marked the foundation of a career built on technical expertise, client advocacy, and a strong focus on supporting owner-managed businesses.
1986 – The Start-Up Phase
Holland & Co Chartered Accountants was established in 1986.
The business initially operated from a converted bedroom at 32 Ash Lane, Widnes — a true start-up environment.
Technology at the time included an Amstrad word processor, representing a step forward from manual typewriters and enabling more efficient client service delivery.
Commercial insight:
This phase reflects the same journey many of your current clients are on — starting small, controlling costs, and building steadily. It’s a powerful positioning point for attracting start-ups today.
1987 – Establishing a Permanent Base
In 1987, 102 Widnes Road was acquired and became the firm’s first permanent office.
The layout was modest:
-
-
Front reception room
-
Rear office
-
Kitchen area
-
Upstairs office and facilities
-
The neighbouring property (104) was still operating as a fruit and vegetable shop.
During this period:
-
-
Nigel’s parents, Dennis and Dorothy Holland, supported the business
-
The firm focused on compliance services:
-
Accounts preparation
-
Tax returns
-
VAT returns
-
-
Nicola Hardman joined as one of the first employees, strengthening administrative capacity.
Commercial insight:
At this stage, the firm was compliance-led — as most practices are initially. The opportunity now is to emphasise advisory-led services to increase average fees per client.
1990 – Strategic Expansion
Property 104 became available and was acquired.
Significant structural work was required, including:
-
-
Replacement of the first-floor front wall
-
Full internal refurbishment
-
Structural stabilisation
-
This was not simply expansion — it was a long-term investment in infrastructure.
1992 – Portfolio Growth
Further acquisitions followed:
106, 108, 110, 114 and 118 Widnes Road.
This created:
-
-
Rental income from ground floor retail units
-
Expanded office capacity on upper floors
-
This phase demonstrates a key strength — combining professional practice with property investment.
Commercial insight:
This is a strong story to leverage in marketing:
You are not just advising on business and tax — you have direct experience in:
-
-
Property investment
-
Asset growth
-
Risk management
-
That differentiates you from many competitors.
2000 – Transition to Modern Working
The practice underwent a major transformation into an open-plan office.
Key works included:
-
-
Removal of internal walls
-
Installation of steel beams
-
Reconfiguration of workspace
-
The result is a significantly larger internal space than the exterior suggests.
Clients frequently describe the premises as “like a Tardis” — an excellent informal branding point.
2003 – Full Modernisation
A further phase of improvements delivered:
-
-
Fully open-plan ground floor
-
Updated exterior appearance
-
Introduction of branded signage
-
This repositioned the firm visually as a modern, forward-thinking practice while retaining its historic roots.
Present Day – Established, Trusted, and Growing
Holland & Co Chartered Accountants continues to operate from its Widnes Road premises.
The location has strengthened commercially, with major developments such as ASDA increasing footfall and visibility.
Today, the firm provides:
-
-
Accounts and tax compliance
-
Tax planning and advisory
-
Business start-up support
-
Growth and profitability advice
-
