Summer Solstice

According to wikipedia, Summer solstice (or estival solstice), also known as midsummer, occurs when one of the Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere (Northern and Southern). For that hemisphere, the summer solstice is when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight. Within the Arctic circle (for the northern hemisphere) or Antarctic circle (for the southern hemisphere), there is continuous daylight around the summer solstice.

Up until now the weather has always been excellent.

On the summer solstice, Earth’s maximum axial tilt toward the Sun is 23.44°. Likewise, the Sun’s declination from the celestial equator is 23.44°.

This is the June solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the December solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.

You may from time to time come across a Druid wandering around the party. This is nothing to be scared of.

If you like, you can engage him in conversation and if you like, he will explain his beliefs and customs.

We do not only have Druids at our party, we also have Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Atheists, Agnostics and Roman Catholics.

Depending on the shift of the calendar, the summer solstice occurs sometime between June 20 and June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere[4][5] and between December 20 and December 23 in the Southern Hemisphere.[6] The same dates in the opposite hemisphere are referred to as the winter solstice.

Join us on our free BBQ which we hold every year.

Since prehistory, the summer solstice has been seen as a significant time of year in many cultures, and has been marked by festivals and rituals. Traditionally, in many temperate regions (especially Europe), the summer solstice is seen as the middle of summer and referred to as “midsummer”. Today, however, in some countries and calendars it is seen as the beginning of summer.

Sandra Norton

We are pleased to be joined by renowned Manchester Literary Critic Sandra Norton. She kindly reads a selection from poems of her choice for us which have caught her interest. Sandra regularly writes reviews online about literary work published during the year.

“Sandra adds a bit of class to the evening.”

Nigel Holland

A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes place during the summer solstice it is a comedy written by William Shakespeare in 1595/96. It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta (the former queen of the Amazons). These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (the mechanicals) who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world.

Colin Harvey

Music is provided by Colin Harvey who is a member of the group Blue Skies. Colin has been performing at our summer solstice party for many years now.

“Colin is an excellent performer. He concentrates on vocals.”
