BREAKING NEWS 11/5/20

Here is a list of of chess players who we have lost as a result of the Corona Virus.

All of them are important to us and they enjoyed playing chess. Some will be known by all of us and some will be know by a few only.

The main reason why we have lost them is because they are not au fait with internet chess. They may have been asked to join us at chess.com and are not confident enough to use a computer to play.

If you know any of these names please contact them and help them join our regular tournaments online. They are great tournaments at the moment but will be even better if we can hold them with these chess players included.

Let’s see if we can get them back in the chess family.

BREAKING NEWS 6/5/20

Thanks to Barbara Farrar there was a fantastic turnout yesterday to the Jody Heaton Memorial Tournament. It was extremely well attended with almost everyone partaking. The online competitions are becoming very popular. There will be another tonight starting 7.30pm there are only one or two members who have not taken part and that’s probably because they don’t know how to.

Let’s try to get them involved. Barbara and Steve will talk them through the procedure if needed.

BREAKING NEWS 5/5/20

The Italian Game is a family of chess openings beginning with the moves:1. e4e52. Nf3Nc63. Bc4

It is used by a number of chess players from Eccles.

The opening is defined by the development of the white bishop to c4 (the so-called “Italian bishop“), where it attacks Black’s vulnerable f7-square. It is part of the large family of Open Games or Double King’s Pawn Games.

Daniel Ipale is a proponent and fervent aficionado.

The Italian Game is one of the oldest recorded chess openings; it occurs in the Göttingen manuscript and was developed by players such as Damiano and Polerio in the 16th century, and later by Greco in 1620, who gave the game its main line. It has been extensively analysed for more than 300 years.

The term Italian Game is sometimes used interchangeably with Giuoco Piano, although the latter also refers particularly to play after 3…Bc5.

One very quiet Chess player who is in our group is from Italy and we know very little about him. He is a strong player and came 3rd on our Tuesday night competition last night. His handle is Logictso and enquiries suggest his telephone number is from the Vatican City.

BREAKING NEWS 28/4/20

Peter McCann from Widnes is scheduled to make his debut tonight at 7.30pm in the Eccles Chess Tournament. There have been delays and problems before including ” The Peter McCann incident” (see below) but tonight he is expected to make his first appearance.

Barbara Farrar has kindly promised to telephone Peter McCann before the Tournament starts to help talk him through how to join. Barbara sends a link on What’s App and also leaves a link on the notes on Chess.com and the telephone call she makes helps new members be able to join the Tournament.

We should adopt this procedure in future when we welcome new members because a number of them have had problems joining the Tournaments. Chess.com is an excellent website but not always user friendly when you first join and needs a bit of getting used to. The answer to the problem is as follows:

• A link to join the Tournament from Barbara or Steve on What’s App.
• A link from Steve or Barbara on the Notes on Eccles Chess Club section on Chess.com
• A phone call from Steve or Barbara to help the new member navigate Chess.com

BREAKING NEWS 27/4/20

Sad news today of the death of a second chess player. This time from the Corona Virus. Following the death a few weeks ago of Jody Heaton we have learnt of the death of a second chess player.

The player was a member of Marshall Chess Club who we hope to play when the Covid-19 pandemic is over. His name was Wesley Hellner. Below is a tweet from Marshall’s press office:

“It is with a heavy heart that the Marshall has received news of club member Wesley Hellner’s passing due to Covid-19. Wesley was one of the club’s most frequent visitors and active players. Though he only became engaged in chess in his late 60’s he made the impressive title”

BREAKING NEWS 22/4/20

Tributes have been pouring in to acknowledge Barbara’s handling of the online Tournaments held 7.30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Last nights tournament was a great success with many chess players participating. However there were problems experienced by Peter McCann again! Peter was unable to join the Tournament and someone in the club needs to help him.

BREAKING NEWS 20/4/20

Barbara Farrar has issued a full apology to Peter McCann and all fellow chess players over her handling of the chess.com Tournament which resulted in ” The Peter McCann incident.”

“The Peter McCann incident” was a mix up online when Peter, whilst trying to join Eccles Chess Club, started playing a series of games, and winning. He was under the impression that these games were part of the Eccles Tournament when in fact they were not.

It turns out that Peter was not included in the Tournament and was in all likelihood playing people outside the Eccles membership online.

Here is Barbara’s apology in full:

“Peter and all fellow chess players, I would like to share my sincere apologies with regards to the results of last nights tourney.  

Last night was a complete shambles,  I put the wrong link on the text message, forgot to put a link on notes. People were unable to log in, members were playing games all over the place and I got third place. BREAKING NEWS 16/4/20

The Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evening tournaments on chess.com are becoming very popular they start at 7.30pm and are enjoyed by many players. Oliver Lawrence has said he prefers 15 minutes to 10 minutes but he will give 10 minute games ago.

Steve Roberts has been beating IMs for fun. He is even looking for Totti during the Tournament when many other players are scared of him.

Steve Roberts studies the game well and researches openings.

Once this virus is over maybe Steve could help us organize the match against the USA on chess.com

BREAKING NEWS 16/4/20

An interesting development has been proposed by Leon Cox regarding the structure of the Tuesday and Wednesday evening Tournaments. Leon has recently been frustrated at the long wait between games and has suggested that we change the time of games to 10 minute games with 5 second increments. He hopes that the shorter game will encourage more people to join.

Peter Cornelia and Totti concur with Leon as does Barbara. Daniel Ipale has remained silent on the issue and refuses to comment without a lawyer present.

BREAKING NEWS 15/4/20

There have been rumours passed around Eccles Chess Club about one of our members. At the moment these rumours are unsubstantiated they but are rife in the Eccles community. They concern Daniel Ipale from Prestwich. Apparently they center around the fact that Daniel Ipale may possibly be a cyborg. He looks human and acts human although no one has ever seen him eat or drink. This has led to the suggestion that food and drink may interfere with his circuit boards.

BREAKING NEWS 14/4/20

Jody Heaton died on Wednesday 8th April 2020. He was from West Didsbury. There will be a post mortem but it is suspected that he died from a brain hemorrhage after a seizure. There will only be a small funeral and probably a remembrance party in September. Jody was 37 years old and an Evertonian. Barbara has suggested holding a Jody Heaton memorial match on the day of his funeral as a sign of respect. We don’t know if it will be shown online.

Jody was a popular member of Eccles Chess Club and had been a member for around 12 months having joined from the Crown & Anchor in Manchester. Jody is survived by his mother.

Chagdarsuren Batbileg from Outer Mongolia has just become a father for the first time. Congratulations!!

A son named Lundaa (meaning luck and good fortune) has been born.

Chagdarsuren was taught how to play chess by his Grandfather (Tsendorj) at 5 years of age.

Revealed at last!!!! The four reasons why Marcial Flores is an excellent chess player….. For years chess players have wondered in amazement why Marcial Flores wins so many games, now it has finally been made public exactly how he does it. The four ways he has been able to beat every body he plays are intrinsically simple and yet pure common sense:

1. A passionate love for the game. From an early age Totti has studied the game he has spent many hours on it.
2. Cognitive abilities Given that chess is an intellectual game, it would be surprising if highly intelligent people didn’t excel in chess more than less intelligent people.
3. Confidence It is always impressive to see a great player like Totti bouncing back after a poor performance. This is a demonstration of self-confidence and absolute belief in himself and his quality of play. This aspect is very important in high-level competitions. Players with low self-esteem are more inclined to not recover easily from a loss in a tournament.
4. Decision-making skills In a single game of chess, each player makes around 40 observable decisions (i.e., chess moves) and numerous covert decisions, such as those about strategy. So it’s possible that people who are generally good at making decisions have an advantage at chess such as Totti.

BREAKING NEWS 3/4/20

The Truth behind the sale of the Malaga Drift in Eccles!!

Yesterday the chess world was up in arms after news broke that the Malaga Drift in Eccles was up for sale or rent. Sasha had announced to the world that he had seen a for sale sign or to let sign on the Malaga Drift building as he cycled past on his way to buy some fruit cider from Morrisons yesterday afternoon.

Sasha went on to say that he thinks that Gordon, the proprietor of the Malaga Drift, realizes the magnitude of the covid-19 problem on his income and decided to go. Sasha also said a”dickhead” might buy the Malaga Drift and kick the chess team out!

It actually turns out that the Malaga Drift is not up for sale. The sign Sasha saw has been there for 2.5 years and is for upstairs. Gordon has a 12 year lease. He asks Sasha to stop making up gossip.

Barbara was due to have a chat with Gordon and Peter blames it all on Chinese viruses.

David Stuttard from Warrington, has been told to stay indoors by his wife, who is a vegan. He was then told to stay indoors by Boris Johnson. As far as we can see he is still indoors. David, who supports Leicester City FC and Bury FC is a train spotter and also a foot lover. He is not a member of chess.com and has been very quiet recently.

David is a socialist and is currently not working. He is an excellent chess player and almost always wins. He has a degree in Maths.

BREAKING NEWS 20/3/20

The woman who saved Eccles Chess Club!! Barbara Farrar is the woman who saved Eccles Chess Club. She did this almost single handed.

Eccles Chess Club at the end of last season was down to its last handful of members when Barbara Farrar decided enough was enough. She went on a recruitment campaign and encouraged, enticed and cajoled anyone and everyone who showed the slightest interest in chess to join Eccles Chess Club.

She ventured into the Crown & Anchor and signed up players such as Jules Irenge, Jody Heaton and Jason Cruz who were all going no where fast.

She even acquired chess players from Outer Mongolia such as Chagdarsuren Batbileg and she signed up other players from elsewhere.

Even now Eccles Chess Club is attracting new members such as Daniel Ipale from Prestwich.

Thank you Barbara for saving Eccles Chess Club.

BREAKING NEWS 19/3/20

Uproar broke out last night in Eccles as chess players argued over the rules. Almost everyone connected with chess knows the rule “touch and move”. This means once a piece has been touched it must be moved. That is what the rules say. It’s very clear. It does not mean it’s an illegal move. It does not mean the game is forfeited.

However last night turned into absolute turmoil as Andy Biscuit touched a piece then changed his mind. The rule “touch and move” was invoked by his opponent and then Andy resigned.

Barbara Farrar, the Arbiter then said it was an illegal move. She then changed her mind and the game was awarded against Andy.

Furthermore please note when a game is in progress no one should distract either of the players. Last night a game was in progress and Barbara, although trying to be helpful, said to the players that” it can’t be a rated game if there is it not timed by a clock.” The game was actually timed, but this intervention by Barbara alerted Jody Heaton that he had not pressed his clock after his move. He then pressed his clock after Barbara’s intervention.

On a further occasion Daniel Ipale interrupted a match by pointing to a knight. Fortunately his suggestion was of no value because it would have been a bad move if his suggestion was taken.

Daniel Ipale has sorted out the bags of chess pieces yesterday. Some were missing a rook, some were missing a bishop and some were missing a knight. Daniel found the missing pieces in other bags which had 3 rooks, bishops or knights. Thanks Daniel.

Jules who is also known as Octave is one of our stronger players and does not conform to orthodox openings when he plays.

He often does not castle early in the game. Jules is a popular member and attends on Tuesdays in Manchester and Wednesdays in Eccles. He is widely accepted as the second best looking chess player in the squad.

Sandra Kelly has joined our group. Welcome Sandra! Sandra used to play chess with her brother many years ago. She is coming to our chess night for the first time on Wednesday at 7.30pm at the Malaga in Eccles. Jody Heaton has offered to help her. Sandra is a nurse and has been for many years. She enjoys Salsa and Kizomba and has visited Africa.

” I have had the pleasure of knowing Sandra for a long time. She is a very kind and generous person and often puts other people before herself. She has a lovely personality and I can understand why she qualified as a nurse because she is so thoughtful.”

Jody Heaton has self-isolated. According to Barbara Farrar, one of our chess members, Jody Heaton has decided to self-isolate. If you see Jody do not approach him. Stay well back. If he sneazes run for it! There is no definitive evidence that Jody has caught the corona virus but he is just taking sensible precautions at this stage.

Daniel Ipale has been chosen to join us at our regular chess events. He has accepted the offer. Daniel has been playing chess at the Crown and Anchor in Hilton St in Manchester on Tuesdays. He plays with both white and black pieces and will be a great addition to the squad. Daniel has a multi-coloured hat.

BREAKING NEWS 3/3/20

A very famous celebrity is penciled in to formally open the chess match between USA v GB. The day of the match is getting closer and a senior member of the royal family may be asked to open proceedings. No definite decision has been made yet but Barbara and Jody are having a meeting on Wednesday and may decide what to do.

BREAKING NEWS 2/3/20

There is a very real and serious danger that the proposed match between USA and GB could be scuppered because of the Corona Virus threat. Billions of pounds have been written off the stock market and many lives have been lost in recent weeks. Discussions are still underway with our American friends regarding the match but it could be cancelled if the Corona Virus outbreak gets any worse. The match will be online so any contamination is unlikely but Leon Cox from GB has met face to face. Nevertheless the USA is not an area which is effected by a large extent. A meeting will be held on Wednesday between Leon Cox, Barbara Farrar and Jody Heaton to come to a decision.

There is going to be a committee meeting to be held for anyone interested in helping with the organising of the match USA v GB starting on Friday 28 February 2020. Location is my house 1 Winwick Park Avenue, Winwick WA2 8XB. 5:30pm to 8:30pm. We shall also be playing social chess during the evening. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served. We have also been in touch with our counterparts in the USA and the response is disappointing. More information will be provided at our meeting.

BREAKING NEWS 27/2/20

We have had a response from the very high rated British chess player who we asked if he would play for us and we are delighted with his response.

He has agreed to turn out for the Great British team in their match against the USA. He will take one of the wild card places which are available.

We are now able to announce his name. This player is well known in Manchester chess circles and helped set up a weekly social chess group in the Crown and Anchor in Hilton St, Manchester every Tuesday. He is marathon runner and his name is Aidan Rawlinson.

BREAKING NEWS 26/2/20

The Great British team have approached a very high rated British chess player in an attempt to improve their chances of victory. If this Manchester based player agrees to play he could take one of the 5 wild card places which are available. There is also a squad of 24 from which the team will be chosen from.

The team is hopeful of signing him up. As soon as information is available it will appear on this website so keep checking on here for further updates.

We are a group of chess players from Great Britain. We currently play for Winwick Chess Club, Eccles Chess Club and a social chess group who meet in The Crown & Anchor in Manchester.

A son named Lundaa (meaning luck and good fortune) has been born.

Chagdarsuren was taught how to play chess by his Grandfather (Tsendorj) at 5 years of age.

Revealed at last!!!! The four reasons why Marcial Flores is an excellent chess player….. For years chess players have wondered in amazement why Marcial Flores wins so many games, now it has finally been made public exactly how he does it. The four ways he has been able to beat every body he plays are intrinsically simple and yet pure common sense:

1. A passionate love for the game. From an early age Totti has studied the game he has spent many hours on it.
2. Cognitive abilities Given that chess is an intellectual game, it would be surprising if highly intelligent people didn’t excel in chess more than less intelligent people.
3. Confidence It is always impressive to see a great player like Totti bouncing back after a poor performance. This is a demonstration of self-confidence and absolute belief in himself and his quality of play. This aspect is very important in high-level competitions. Players with low self-esteem are more inclined to not recover easily from a loss in a tournament.

The Truth behind the sale of the Malaga Drift in Eccles!!

Yesterday the chess world was up in arms after news broke that the Malaga Drift in Eccles was up for sale or rent. Sasha had announced to the world that he had seen a for sale sign or to let sign on the Malaga Drift building as he cycled past on his way to buy some fruit cider from Morrisons yesterday afternoon.

Sasha went on to say that he thinks that Gordon, the proprietor of the Malaga Drift, realizes the magnitude of the covid-19 problem on his income and decided to go. Sasha also said a”dickhead” might buy the Malaga Drift and kick the chess team out!

It actually turns out that the Malaga Drift is not up for sale. The sign Sasha saw has been there for 2.5 years and is for upstairs. Gordon has a 12 year lease. He asks Sasha to stop making up gossip.

Barbara was due to have a chat with Gordon and Peter blames it all on Chinese viruses.

David Stuttard from Warrington, has been told to stay indoors by his wife, who is a vegan. He was then told to stay indoors by Boris Johnson. As far as we can see he is still indoors. David, who supports Leicester City FC and Bury FC is a train spotter and also a foot lover. He is not a member of chess.com and has been very quiet recently.

David is a socialist and is currently not working. He is an excellent chess player and almost always wins. He has a degree in Maths.

BREAKING NEWS 20/3/20

The woman who saved Eccles Chess Club!! Barbara Farrar is the woman who saved Eccles Chess Club. She did this almost single handed.

Eccles Chess Club at the end of last season was down to its last handful of members when Barbara Farrar decided enough was enough. She went on a recruitment campaign and encouraged, enticed and cajoled anyone and everyone who showed the slightest interest in chess to join Eccles Chess Club.

She ventured into the Crown & Anchor and signed up players such as Jules Irenge, Jody Heaton and Jason Cruz who were all going no where fast.

She even acquired chess players from Outer Mongolia such as Chagdarsuren Batbileg and she signed up other players from elsewhere.

Even now Eccles Chess Club is attracting new members such as Daniel Ipale from Prestwich.

Thank you Barbara for saving Eccles Chess Club.

BREAKING NEWS 19/3/20

Uproar broke out last night in Eccles as chess players argued over the rules. Almost everyone connected with chess knows the rule “touch and move”. This means once a piece has been touched it must be moved. That is what the rules say. It’s very clear. It does not mean it’s an illegal move. It does not mean the game is forfeited.

However last night turned into absolute turmoil as Andy Biscuit touched a piece then changed his mind. The rule “touch and move” was invoked by his opponent and then Andy resigned.

Barbara Farrar, the Arbiter then said it was an illegal move. She then changed her mind and the game was awarded against Andy.

Furthermore please note when a game is in progress no one should distract either of the players. Last night a game was in progress and Barbara, although trying to be helpful, said to the players that” it can’t be a rated game if there is it not timed by a clock.” The game was actually timed, but this intervention by Barbara alerted Jody Heaton that he had not pressed his clock after his move. He then pressed his clock after Barbara’s intervention.

On a further occasion Daniel Ipale interrupted a match by pointing to a knight. Fortunately his suggestion was of no value because it would have been a bad move if his suggestion was taken.

Daniel Ipale has sorted out the bags of chess pieces yesterday. Some were missing a rook, some were missing a bishop and some were missing a knight. Daniel found the missing pieces in other bags which had 3 rooks, bishops or knights. Thanks Daniel.

Jules Irenge has been identified as the chess player who is fancied by one of our new members.

Jules who is also known as Octave is one of our stronger players and does not conform to orthodox openings when he plays.

He often does not castle early in the game. Jules is a popular member and attends on Tuesdays in Manchester and Wednesdays in Eccles. He is widely accepted as the second best looking chess player in the squad.

A very famous celebrity is penciled in to formally open the chess match between USA v GB. The day of the match is getting closer and a senior member of the royal family may be asked to open proceedings. No definite decision has been made yet but Barbara and Jody are having a meeting on Wednesday and may decide what to do.

There is a very real and serious danger that the proposed match between USA and GB could be scuppered because of the Corona Virus threat. Billions of pounds have been written off the stock market and many lives have been lost in recent weeks. Discussions are still underway with our American friends regarding the match but it could be cancelled if the Corona Virus outbreak gets any worse. The match will be online so any contamination is unlikely but Leon Cox from GB has met face to face. Nevertheless the USA is not an area which is effected by a large extent. A meeting will be held on Wednesday between Leon Cox, Barbara Farrar and Jody Heaton to come to a decision.

BREAKING NEWS 27/2/20

We have had a response from the very high rated British chess player who we asked if he would play for us and we are delighted with his response.

He has agreed to turn out for the Great British team in their match against the USA. He will take one of the wild card places which are available.

We are now able to announce his name. This player is well known in Manchester chess circles and helped set up a weekly social chess group in the Crown and Anchor in Hilton St, Manchester every Tuesday. He is marathon runner and his name is Aidan Rawlinson.

The Great British team have approached a very high rated British chess player in an attempt to improve their chances of victory. If this Manchester based player agrees to play he could take one of the 5 wild card places which are available. There is also a squad of 24 from which the team will be chosen from.

We are a group of chess players from Great Britain. We currently play for Winwick Chess Club, Eccles Chess Club and a social chess group who meet in The Crown & Anchor in Manchester.

One very quiet Chess player who is in our group is from Italy and we know very little about him. He is a strong player and came 3rd on our Tuesday night competition last night. His handle is Logictso and enquiries suggest his telephone number is from the Vatican City.

BREAKING NEWS 28/4/20

Peter McCann from Widnes is scheduled to make his debut tonight at 7.30pm in the Eccles Chess Tournament. There have been delays and problems before including ” The Peter McCann incident” (see below) but tonight he is expected to make his first appearance.

Barbara Farrar has kindly promised to telephone Peter McCann before the Tournament starts to help talk him through how to join. Barbara sends a link on What’s App and also leaves a link on the notes on Chess.com and the telephone call she makes helps new members be able to join the Tournament.

We should adopt this procedure in future when we welcome new members because a number of them have had problems joining the Tournaments. Chess.com is an excellent website but not always user friendly when you first join and needs a bit of getting used to. The answer to the problem is as follows:

• A link to join the Tournament from Barbara or Steve on What’s App.
• A link from Steve or Barbara on the Notes on Eccles Chess Club section on Chess.com
• A phone call from Steve or Barbara to help the new member navigate Chess.com

Sad news today of the death of a second chess player. This time from the Corona Virus. Following the death a few weeks ago of Jody Heaton we have learnt of the death of a second chess player.

The player was a member of Marshall Chess Club who we hope to play when the Covid-19 pandemic is over. His name was Wesley Hellner. Below is a tweet from Marshall’s press office:

BREAKING NEWS 22/4/20

Tributes have been pouring in to acknowledge Barbara’s handling of the online Tournaments held 7.30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Last nights tournament was a great success with many chess players participating. However there were problems experienced by Peter McCann again! Peter was unable to join the Tournament and someone in the club needs to help him.

BREAKING NEWS 20/4/20

Barbara Farrar has issued a full apology to Peter McCann and all fellow chess players over her handling of the chess.com Tournament which resulted in ” The Peter McCann incident.”

“The Peter McCann incident” was a mix up online when Peter, whilst trying to join Eccles Chess Club, started playing a series of games, and winning. He was under the impression that these games were part of the Eccles Tournament when in fact they were not.

It turns out that Peter was not included in the Tournament and was in all likelihood playing people outside the Eccles membership online.

Here is Barbara’s apology in full:

“Peter and all fellow chess players, I would like to share my sincere apologies with regards to the results of last nights tourney.  

Last night was a complete shambles,  I put the wrong link on the text message, forgot to put a link on notes. People were unable to log in, members were playing games all over the place and I got third place. BREAKING NEWS 16/4/20

The Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evening tournaments on chess.com are becoming very popular they start at 7.30pm and are enjoyed by many players. Oliver Lawrence has said he prefers 15 minutes to 10 minutes but he will give 10 minute games ago.

Steve Roberts has been beating IMs for fun. He is even looking for Totti during the Tournament when many other players are scared of him.

Steve Roberts studies the game well and researches openings.

Once this virus is over maybe Steve could help us organize the match against the USA on chess.com

BREAKING NEWS 16/4/20

An interesting development has been proposed by Leon Cox regarding the structure of the Tuesday and Wednesday evening Tournaments. Leon has recently been frustrated at the long wait between games and has suggested that we change the time of games to 10 minute games with 5 second increments. He hopes that the shorter game will encourage more people to join.

Peter Cornelia and Totti concur with Leon as does Barbara. Daniel Ipale has remained silent on the issue and refuses to comment without a lawyer present.

BREAKING NEWS 15/4/20

There have been rumours passed around Eccles Chess Club about one of our members. At the moment these rumours are unsubstantiated they but are rife in the Eccles community. They concern Daniel Ipale from Prestwich. Apparently they center around the fact that Daniel Ipale may possibly be a cyborg. He looks human and acts human although no one has ever seen him eat or drink. This has led to the suggestion that food and drink may interfere with his circuit boards.

Daniel Ipale has not commented on the allegations up to date. He announced “I’m in” on our regular What’s app/ Chess.com tournament this Tuesday but then mysteriously disappeared.

BREAKING NEWS 14/4/20

Jody Heaton died on Wednesday 8th April 2020. He was from West Didsbury. There will be a post mortem but it is suspected that he died from a brain hemorrhage after a seizure. There will only be a small funeral and probably a remembrance party in September. Jody was 37 years old and an Evertonian. Barbara has suggested holding a Jody Heaton memorial match on the day of his funeral as a sign of respect. We don’t know if it will be shown online.

Jody was a popular member of Eccles Chess Club and had been a member for around 12 months having joined from the Crown & Anchor in Manchester. Jody is survived by his mother.

A son named Lundaa (meaning luck and good fortune) has been born.

Chagdarsuren was taught how to play chess by his Grandfather (Tsendorj) at 5 years of age.

Revealed at last!!!! The four reasons why Marcial Flores is an excellent chess player….. For years chess players have wondered in amazement why Marcial Flores wins so many games, now it has finally been made public exactly how he does it. The four ways he has been able to beat every body he plays are intrinsically simple and yet pure common sense:

1. A passionate love for the game. From an early age Totti has studied the game he has spent many hours on it.
2. Cognitive abilities Given that chess is an intellectual game, it would be surprising if highly intelligent people didn’t excel in chess more than less intelligent people.
3. Confidence It is always impressive to see a great player like Totti bouncing back after a poor performance. This is a demonstration of self-confidence and absolute belief in himself and his quality of play. This aspect is very important in high-level competitions. Players with low self-esteem are more inclined to not recover easily from a loss in a tournament.

The Truth behind the sale of the Malaga Drift in Eccles!!

Yesterday the chess world was up in arms after news broke that the Malaga Drift in Eccles was up for sale or rent. Sasha had announced to the world that he had seen a for sale sign or to let sign on the Malaga Drift building as he cycled past on his way to buy some fruit cider from Morrisons yesterday afternoon.

Sasha went on to say that he thinks that Gordon, the proprietor of the Malaga Drift, realizes the magnitude of the covid-19 problem on his income and decided to go. Sasha also said a”dickhead” might buy the Malaga Drift and kick the chess team out!

It actually turns out that the Malaga Drift is not up for sale. The sign Sasha saw has been there for 2.5 years and is for upstairs. Gordon has a 12 year lease. He asks Sasha to stop making up gossip.

Barbara was due to have a chat with Gordon and Peter blames it all on Chinese viruses.

David Stuttard from Warrington, has been told to stay indoors by his wife, who is a vegan. He was then told to stay indoors by Boris Johnson. As far as we can see he is still indoors. David, who supports Leicester City FC and Bury FC is a train spotter and also a foot lover. He is not a member of chess.com and has been very quiet recently.

David is a socialist and is currently not working. He is an excellent chess player and almost always wins. He has a degree in Maths.

BREAKING NEWS 20/3/20

The woman who saved Eccles Chess Club!! Barbara Farrar is the woman who saved Eccles Chess Club. She did this almost single handed.

Eccles Chess Club at the end of last season was down to its last handful of members when Barbara Farrar decided enough was enough. She went on a recruitment campaign and encouraged, enticed and cajoled anyone and everyone who showed the slightest interest in chess to join Eccles Chess Club.

She ventured into the Crown & Anchor and signed up players such as Jules Irenge, Jody Heaton and Jason Cruz who were all going no where fast.

She even acquired chess players from Outer Mongolia such as Chagdarsuren Batbileg and she signed up other players from elsewhere.

Even now Eccles Chess Club is attracting new members such as Daniel Ipale from Prestwich.

Thank you Barbara for saving Eccles Chess Club.

BREAKING NEWS 19/3/20

Uproar broke out last night in Eccles as chess players argued over the rules. Almost everyone connected with chess knows the rule “touch and move”. This means once a piece has been touched it must be moved. That is what the rules say. It’s very clear. It does not mean it’s an illegal move. It does not mean the game is forfeited.

However last night turned into absolute turmoil as Andy Biscuit touched a piece then changed his mind. The rule “touch and move” was invoked by his opponent and then Andy resigned.

Barbara Farrar, the Arbiter then said it was an illegal move. She then changed her mind and the game was awarded against Andy.

Furthermore please note when a game is in progress no one should distract either of the players. Last night a game was in progress and Barbara, although trying to be helpful, said to the players that” it can’t be a rated game if there is it not timed by a clock.” The game was actually timed, but this intervention by Barbara alerted Jody Heaton that he had not pressed his clock after his move. He then pressed his clock after Barbara’s intervention.

On a further occasion Daniel Ipale interrupted a match by pointing to a knight. Fortunately his suggestion was of no value because it would have been a bad move if his suggestion was taken.

Daniel Ipale has sorted out the bags of chess pieces yesterday. Some were missing a rook, some were missing a bishop and some were missing a knight. Daniel found the missing pieces in other bags which had 3 rooks, bishops or knights. Thanks Daniel.

Jules Irenge has been identified as the chess player who is fancied by one of our new members.

Jules who is also known as Octave is one of our stronger players and does not conform to orthodox openings when he plays.

He often does not castle early in the game. Jules is a popular member and attends on Tuesdays in Manchester and Wednesdays in Eccles. He is widely accepted as the second best looking chess player in the squad.

A very famous celebrity is penciled in to formally open the chess match between USA v GB. The day of the match is getting closer and a senior member of the royal family may be asked to open proceedings. No definite decision has been made yet but Barbara and Jody are having a meeting on Wednesday and may decide what to do.

There is a very real and serious danger that the proposed match between USA and GB could be scuppered because of the Corona Virus threat. Billions of pounds have been written off the stock market and many lives have been lost in recent weeks. Discussions are still underway with our American friends regarding the match but it could be cancelled if the Corona Virus outbreak gets any worse. The match will be online so any contamination is unlikely but Leon Cox from GB has met face to face. Nevertheless the USA is not an area which is effected by a large extent. A meeting will be held on Wednesday between Leon Cox, Barbara Farrar and Jody Heaton to come to a decision.

We have had a response from the very high rated British chess player who we asked if he would play for us and we are delighted with his response.

He has agreed to turn out for the Great British team in their match against the USA. He will take one of the wild card places which are available.

We are now able to announce his name. This player is well known in Manchester chess circles and helped set up a weekly social chess group in the Crown and Anchor in Hilton St, Manchester every Tuesday. He is marathon runner and his name is Aidan Rawlinson.

The Great British team have approached a very high rated British chess player in an attempt to improve their chances of victory. If this Manchester based player agrees to play he could take one of the 5 wild card places which are available. There is also a squad of 24 from which the team will be chosen from.

Dear Sirs,

We are a group of chess players from Great Britain. We currently play for Winwick Chess Club, Eccles Chess Club and a social chess group who meet in The Crown & Anchor in Manchester.

Peter, above has suggested that you can work out a rough FIDE/ Elo grade by taking your ECF grade multiplying it by 7.5 and then adding 700.

He went on to explain that Grandmaster Grade is above 2450 FIDE he thinks.

Super GM like Carlsen are over 2700 minimum.

The Truth behind the sale of the Malaga Drift in Eccles!!

Yesterday the chess world was up in arms after news broke that the Malaga Drift in Eccles was up for sale or rent. Sasha had announced to the world that he had seen a for sale sign or to let sign on the Malaga Drift building as he cycled past on his way to buy some fruit cider from Morrisons yesterday afternoon.

Sasha went on to say that he thinks that Gordon, the proprietor of the Malaga Drift, realizes the magnitude of the covid-19 problem on his income and decided to go. Sasha also said a”dickhead” might buy the Malaga Drift and kick the chess team out!

It actually turns out that the Malaga Drift is not up for sale. The sign Sasha saw has been there for 2.5 years and is for upstairs. Gordon has a 12 year lease. He asks Sasha to stop making up gossip.

Barbara was due to have a chat with Gordon and Peter blames it all on Chinese viruses.

BREAKING NEWS 1/4/20

David Stuttard from Warrington, has been told to stay indoors by his wife, who is a vegan. He was then told to stay indoors by Boris Johnson. As far as we can see he is still indoors. David, who supports Leicester City FC and Bury FC is a train spotter and also a foot lover. He is not a member of chess.com and has been very quiet recently.

David is a socialist and is currently not working. He is an excellent chess player and almost always wins. He has a degree in Maths.

BREAKING NEWS 20/3/20

The woman who saved Eccles Chess Club!! Barbara Farrar is the woman who saved Eccles Chess Club. She did this almost single handed.

Eccles Chess Club at the end of last season was down to its last handful of members when Barbara Farrar decided enough was enough. She went on a recruitment campaign and encouraged, enticed and cajoled anyone and everyone who showed the slightest interest in chess to join Eccles Chess Club.

She ventured into the Crown & Anchor and signed up players such as Jules Irenge, Jody Heaton and Jason Cruz who were all going no where fast.

She even acquired chess players from Outer Mongolia such as Chagdarsuren Batbileg and she signed up other players from elsewhere.

Even now Eccles Chess Club is attracting new members such as Daniel Ipale from Prestwich.

Thank you Barbara for saving Eccles Chess Club.

BREAKING NEWS 19/3/20

Uproar broke out last night in Eccles as chess players argued over the rules. Almost everyone connected with chess knows the rule “touch and move”. This means once a piece has been touched it must be moved. That is what the rules say. It’s very clear. It does not mean it’s an illegal move. It does not mean the game is forfeited.

However last night turned into absolute turmoil as Andy Biscuit touched a piece then changed his mind. The rule “touch and move” was invoked by his opponent and then Andy resigned.

Barbara Farrar, the Arbiter then said it was an illegal move. She then changed her mind and the game was awarded against Andy.

Furthermore please note when a game is in progress no one should distract either of the players. Last night a game was in progress and Barbara, although trying to be helpful, said to the players that” it can’t be a rated game if there is it not timed by a clock.” The game was actually timed, but this intervention by Barbara alerted Jody Heaton that he had not pressed his clock after his move. He then pressed his clock after Barbara’s intervention.

On a further occasion Daniel Ipale interrupted a match by pointing to a knight. Fortunately his suggestion was of no value because it would have been a bad move if his suggestion was taken.

Daniel Ipale has sorted out the bags of chess pieces yesterday. Some were missing a rook, some were missing a bishop and some were missing a knight. Daniel found the missing pieces in other bags which had 3 rooks, bishops or knights. Thanks Daniel.

Jules Irenge has been identified as the chess player who is fancied by one of our new members.

Jules who is also known as Octave is one of our stronger players and does not conform to orthodox openings when he plays.

He often does not castle early in the game. Jules is a popular member and attends on Tuesdays in Manchester and Wednesdays in Eccles. He is widely accepted as the second best looking chess player in the squad.

She enjoys Salsa and Kizomba and has visited Africa.

A very famous celebrity is penciled in to formally open the chess match between USA v GB. The day of the match is getting closer and a senior member of the royal family may be asked to open proceedings. No definite decision has been made yet but Barbara and Jody are having a meeting on Wednesday and may decide what to do.

There is a very real and serious danger that the proposed match between USA and GB could be scuppered because of the Corona Virus threat. Billions of pounds have been written off the stock market and many lives have been lost in recent weeks. Discussions are still underway with our American friends regarding the match but it could be cancelled if the Corona Virus outbreak gets any worse. The match will be online so any contamination is unlikely but Leon Cox from GB has met face to face. Nevertheless the USA is not an area which is effected by a large extent. A meeting will be held on Wednesday between Leon Cox, Barbara Farrar and Jody Heaton to come to a decision.

BREAKING NEWS 27/2/20

We have had a response from the very high rated British chess player who we asked if he would play for us and we are delighted with his response.

He has agreed to turn out for the Great British team in their match against the USA. He will take one of the wild card places which are available.

We are now able to announce his name. This player is well known in Manchester chess circles and helped set up a weekly social chess group in the Crown and Anchor in Hilton St, Manchester every Tuesday. He is marathon runner and his name is Aidan Rawlinson.

The Great British team have approached a very high rated British chess player in an attempt to improve their chances of victory. If this Manchester based player agrees to play he could take one of the 5 wild card places which are available. There is also a squad of 24 from which the team will be chosen from.

The chess match of the century GB v USA

Dear Sirs,

We are a group of chess players from Great Britain. We currently play for Winwick Chess Club, Eccles Chess Club and a social chess group who meet in The Crown & Anchor in Manchester.

We, collectively are challenging you, Marshalls chess Club in New York USA to a team chess match USA v GB.

Leon Cox who is a member of both Winwick and Eccles chess clubs has jetted off to New York to open negotiations with the Yanks on the format of the match. He is planning to meet them on Wednesday 20th February 2020

Since writing the above Leon has visited Marshall Chess Club on 10th St and said the Americans are picking their team.

Leon is doing a great job helping to organise the match.

Peter, above has suggested that you can work out a rough FIDE/ Elo grade by taking your ECF grade multiplying it by 7.5 and then adding 700.

He went on to explain that Grandmaster Grade is above 2450 FIDE he thinks.

Super GM like Carlsen are over 2700 minimum.
