Business Roundup - March 2010

The end of recession and the beginning of recovery?

The recession: a brief history

The UK economy has finally emerged from one of its
deepest economic downturns and the worst since the
1930s, or so official figures released in January suggest.

Preliminary data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS)
showed that in the last three months of 2009 the economy
expanded by 0.1 per cent, ending six consecutive quarters
of contraction. However, the rate of growth was well below
the 0.4 per cent anticipated by some analysts.

Here we look at how the UK economy came to be mired in
such a profound and long recession.

The recession: the present and the future

The recession has exerted enormous pressure on both
businesses and consumers. Businesses have struggled
to obtain credit; consumers have tightened belts.

So where has the recession left us?

And where do we go from here on business growth,
inflation and savings?

More paternity leave for fathers

Fathers of newborn children are to be given an
entitlement to substantially more paternity leave
under new rules that will come into effect in April 2011.

Other employment issues have also been in the news.
The government's consultation into the future of the default
retirement age of 65 has closed.

Meanwhile planned regulations that will give temporary
workers many of the same employment rights as permanent
staff have entered the process of legislation.

Online filing date looms for employers

The date when many more employers will have to file their
employer annual returns electronically is approaching.

By the 19 May, large numbers of small employers with
fewer than 50 staff must submit their annual returns online.

HM Revenue and Customs has also reminded taxpayers that
they need to use the tax authority's new bank accounts
when making payments.
